Andy Johnson owner of SVG Motor Sport
Andy has been competing in a wide range of formula over 30 years. Starting when he was 18 years old banger racing on a dirt tracks, progressing to oval racing with Spedeworth. In 1988 Andy decided to go classic rallying and completed in the first-ever Pirelli Classic Marathon in a 1200cc Simca Special, returning 20 years later to compete in a Toyota Corona. He also competed in the inaugural Monte Carlo Challenge.
For eight years Andy worked for Historic Rally legend Philip Young as part of his support crew. “It was fantastic fun, but it was hard work. One year with the really bad snow we didn’t sleep for two nights; we just worked straight through. Philip started historic rallying in England and people don’t realise how much work he did. He’s a very clever man.”
Andy is well known for campaigning in Toyota Coronas. The first Toyota Corona was bought to go rallying with, but having kids at that time it was suggested he try circuit racing. After attending a classic touring car race meeting it was decided to build the Corona for racing and he still uses the car today for circuit racing. The Corona has had a couple of outings at the Goodwood Revival meeting, has raced at Silverstone in an F1 Grand Prix support race and the Brighton Speed Trials. A second Corona was built for the 20th anniversary of the Classic Marathon.
